Ring of Fire [Pacific Rim]

It's 2025. The Jaeger program has finally been shut down, as the Wall of Life stands silent guard on the Pacific coastlines of nations around the world. Earlier in the year, Marshal Pentecost organized a last desperate raid on the Breach with three of the most renowned Jaegers who remain operational. Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon and Striker Eureka accompanied the refurbished Coyote Tango in an attempt to drop a nuclear weapon down the Breach to destroy it.

The attempt failed.

Devastated, Stalker Pentecost stopped taking his pills and succumbed to his longstanding radiation sickness. It is a pity he didn't live to see that though the attempt on the Breach failed, no more Kaiju have come through since. The last attack was more than a few months ago, and the world thinks that either the Wall or Pentecost's last stand have saved them.

Whatever the case may be, the Jaeger program is finished. After the completion of the Hong Kong wall, the remaining Jaegers were decommisioned and are being shipped to the barely-functional Los Angeles Shatterdome, to await transport to Oblivion Bay. They are currently in transit, but a few of the other, lesser-known Jaegers are already there: Titan Atlas, Iron Storm and Phantom Intrepid are there with their crews waiting for just a little while longer before these mechanical warriors are laid to rest.

The Fang twins were sitting on Atlas's right shoulder beside each-other with their missing limbs between them.

"This doesn't feel right! We can't let them kill these war veterans, even if they ain't human doesn't mean that they haven't felt pain during a fight!" Trent yells with all his lungs.

"They fought along side us! They bled with us!" Tyler yells in agreement to his brother's outburst. After a few minutes the two cripples amazingly climbed down their Jaeger and stand at Titian Atlas's feet. They both seemed angered about the whole ordeal.

"Nothing for it, fellas. Orders are orders." One of the Jaeger techs spread his hands helplessly. "None of us here like it any more'n you two."

At that moment, interestingly, the Shatterdome's PA clicked on. "Attention all personnel. A Category IV event is taking place." The speaker may have been referring to the weather, so different it was from the deployment messages earlier. No klaxons blared, no lights flashed. They didn't need to; the Wall of Life's completion meant that the Kaiju were contained to the Pacific Ocean. "The Kaiju is currently approaching the Los Angeles Anti-Kaiju Wall. More bulletins will be delivered as they come in."

Generally, nobody looked concerned. Titan Atlas and the other two mechanical residents of the Shatterdome weren't on guard anymore; the Wall would do that for them.

"We can prove that we are still needed! Come on!" Ananda said, who was equally disappointed of the Jaegers future plans. His partner Seng, glared at Ananda as if to say it was a stupid idea.

"Why bother, they have that precious wall." Jim says while his former crime partner Marley sat on the right knee of their own Jaeger.

"Wall or not there's still a level IV out there, and if nobody else is going to do something, why not it be us?" asks Marley, looking at Jim.

"We have done something. We done built that Wall out there, th' one that's gonna keep that kaiju outta Los Angeles," said a disgruntled-looking hard-hatted man.

Meanwhile the PA kept playing the news radio keeping watch over the kaiju's approach. It had been codenamed "Mutavore" and was currently approaching the Wall. Despite everyone's self-assurance regarding the Wall's invincibility, it was still frightening to think about that mountain of flesh and teeth out there.

Distant booms echoed through the Shatterdome; the railguns atop the Wall firing at the kaiju to warn it to back off.

"We'll be right back. The knowing that monster is out there makes our skin crawl." Tyler says as Trent nodded in agreement. The twins were walking towards the launch station and it was obvious that they were fighting the urge to run into combat.

"Get it out of your heads, guys." One of the techs had made the assumption that the twins were going to get into Titan Atlas. It was a little less simple than, say, a car; launching a Jaeger required outside support to initiate the Drift among other things. "It's over."

Meanwhile, from outside came a low roar, like a bull the size of the Eiffel Tower bellowing, followed by the sound of an impact. The announcer on the radio's tone took on a different tone. "That was...one of the railgun mounts being destroyed." one of the nearby workers said slowly.

Another impact sounded from outside, followed by a titanic crumbling sound. It had been forty-five minutes since Mutavore reached the Wall, according to the radio, and it had just smashed its way through. Sirens blared outside.

"You hear that?! That monster is trying to get through that wall of yours and it just destroyed one of the guns! What amount of destruction does it take for you to just put Titian Atlas on standby status? Wouldn't the fact that Jaegers ready to defend put the public's minds at ease? It would help me sleep at night to know that there are Jaegers out there keeping my town safe during the night." Tyler spat at the tech that yelled at them.

"You're fighting against two field trained pilots that fought those monsters. While we were risking our lives out there, you were safe and sound in your base. But you know what they say, 'Old habits die hard'." Trent says calmly opposite his brother's rage filled rant. They went back to the launch station and Tyler had his arm tense.

The radio announcer's voice was suddenly cut off by a much more official-sounding notice. "Aᴛᴛᴇɴᴛɪᴏɴ ᴀʟʟ sʜᴀᴛᴛᴇʀᴅᴏᴍᴇ ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴɴᴇʟ. Aᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ʀᴇǫᴜᴇsᴛ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ Lᴏs Aɴɢᴇʟᴇs ᴄɪᴛʏ ɢᴏᴠᴇʀɴᴍᴇɴᴛ, ᴡᴇ ᴡɪʟʟ ᴛᴇᴍᴘᴏʀᴀʀɪʟʏ ʀᴇ-ᴀᴄᴛɪᴠᴀᴛᴇ Iʀᴏɴ Sᴛᴏʀᴍ, Pʜᴀɴᴛᴏᴍ Iɴᴛʀᴇᴘɪᴅ, Tɪᴛᴀɴ Aᴛʟᴀs ᴀɴᴅ Sʜᴀᴅᴏᴡ Fᴀɴɢ ᴛᴏ ᴄᴏᴍʙᴀᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ᴋᴀɪᴊᴜ ᴇᴠᴇɴᴛ ᴛᴀᴋɪɴɢ ᴘʟᴀᴄᴇ. Aʟʟ ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴɴᴇʟ ᴛᴏ ᴛʜᴇɪʀ ᴀᴘᴘᴏɪɴᴛᴇᴅ sᴛᴀᴛɪᴏɴs. Jᴀᴇɢᴇʀ ᴘɪʟᴏᴛs ᴘʀᴇᴘᴀʀᴇ ғᴏʀ ᴅʀɪғᴛ."

"Let's race to a refresher of ourselves!" Tyler shouts as he an Trent take off to get suited up to pilot Atlas. Four minutes after the twins were out of sight they were spotted charging into Titian Atlas.

"Titian Atlas to control, five seconds to drift. Mark!" Trent says starting a five second count down before the drift. It usually took ten seconds for them to get mentally ready but they were pushing it today.

"Engage Drift!" Both twins say in sync as the count down ended and the drift hit the twins.

"let's go." says Marley as Jim gets up and runs to gear up for the fight. Marley follows.

"Finally, someone says something sensible." says Jim between his teeth. now suited up, they make their way to Iron Storm.

"I will be the one to kill the Kaiju!" Ananda says running to the robot, followed by his partner who didn't seem too enthusiastic.

Jim and Marley hook themselves into Iron Storm.

Jim: "Initiate drift in 3...2..."
Marley: "1."

Tim "Lets do are job initiate drift"
Sam "In 3 2 1......."

"Titan Atlas ready for combat!" The twins said in sync which activated the comunicator. Atlas walked to the harness area to get rigged for the air drop. "You guys wish that you trusted your instincts huh?" The twins mocked as Atlas was fitted and was ordered to proceed to air lift to combat. "See you on the battle field." The twins say before they were airlifted from the shatter dome.

Four Drifts activate, four Jaegers are online, four neural handshakes steady and holding. As each Jaeger is lifted out of the Shatterdome by its helicopters, their interfaces bring up a map sent from LOCCENT:



"As you can see, Mutavore has broken through the Wall and is heading for downtown Los Angeles. All four of you will be deployed along the Miracle Mile, spaced 1000 feet apart, in a line blocking its advance." The substitute LOCCENT controller keyed off his headset and sighed. "Those damn twins creep me out talking like that..."

"Are Jaeger isnt very good fighting close to other Jaegers so if we get into tight with that Kiju only help if we ask" says Tim to the others.

"Atlas is more mix combat. Also, make sure everybody reports in after drop, we don't want to have to deal with friendly fire." The twins said in sync before turning to each other.

"Feels great huh?" Trent asked his brother who burst out laughing.

"No, just feels like home." Tyler replies as the twins face forward again. "Let's ask the others how they feel."

"Atlas to all Jaegers, how does it feel to be in battle again since the wall was finished?" The twins asked in sync which activated their open band radio.

As the twins spoke, the helicopters were just about to the destination. Mutavore wasn't in view yet; that would give the Jaegers some time to speak amongst themselves before the Category 4 was upon them. LOCCENT's comm line blinked to life in their Conn-Pods. "Be advised, Mutavore is the largest Category 4 we've seen yet. Careful out there, Rangers. We don't want to lose any of you, even if we aren't supposed to need you anymore."

"Aw look, he cares for us." Tyler says before Trent started to laugh.

"Atlas to helicopters, do any of you have any intel of Mutavore's appearance or current location?" The twins ask the helicopter pilots as the Titian Atlas team got ready to drop. "Atlas to shatter dome, do you have any information on the breach? More importantly, do you detect any more Kaiju traveling the breach?" The twins ask while they brace for the drop.

"LOCCENT here. No other Kaiju signatures detected; why would there be?" The cables holding the Jaegers airborne detach and the four immense machines splash down into the ocean, Los Angeles at their backs. Somewhere in front of them is the largest Kaiju yet, heading straight for the city, and they're here to stop it.

"Just checking to make sure that we don't get overwhelmed out here." The twins say as Atlas watches the water nearby for the Kaiju. "LOCCENT, this is Atlas, we do not have a visual of Mutavore. We are at the front of the mirical mile and need a lock on the target." The twins called out over the air waves as Titian Atlas is moving in a sweeping pattern to try and locate Mutavore.

sam:"Arm pulse gun fully charged"
Tim:" Good we will take the frunt if thats okay with you guys?"
Shadow fang says to the others.

"Negative Shadow Fang, Titian Atlas is the first line of defence, you are needed for backup if we fail to stop Mutavore." The twins say in unison as the right arm of Atlas stops Shadow Fang. "We would rather die alone then the whole city die after us."
