Medieval Mayhem

ExclamationWARNING: The DM's knowledge of history extends primarily back to 1900 and deteriorates from there. Expect inaccuracies and mistakes from time to time.  Exclamation

This RP, like its predecessor(s) C&C I and Timebreak, will be an NSRP (Nation-State Roleplay) set in Europe in the year 1400. As in previous RPs I have DMed, historical accuracy may not conform exactly to what may be expected (largely because I'm no expert on the 1400s). I will be the DM and will have final say on the outcome of battles, intelligence/assassination attempts, research and development and such; however I'm only human, and if you think I've got it wrong, then for the love of God tell me!

I'll try not to be completely arbitrary.  study

(Alright, I'll start)

Tuscany's largest industry is wool, but is also developing banking (thanks to the Medici and other wealthy banking families). The banks founded in Tuscany are also spreading to other Italian city states. Tuscany has recently bought ships to compete with Venice, in terms of trade. Tuscany is trying to open trade relations with Genoa and France as well as Milan, to avoid competition from Venice.

Tuscany's attempt to increase trade is most successful in Milan and Genoa; France doesn't seem to be terribly interested.

(What map are you using for this roleplay? I am going to use this map (http://www.worldstatesmen.org/Italy_historic.jpg) for the Italian states [if it is OK])

Encouraged by their success in making trade relations with Genoa and Milan, Tuscany tries to form a trade-union with its naboring states.

(Is there anything important happening in Italy currently?)

[That's more or less what I'm using. I'm half-way using the starting map from Europa Universalis III: Divine Wind, which I can't seem to find a reliable image of so I'm going on memory. At the moment most small countries are being fairly quiet; I want them to be easy for players to eat so I don't have to keep track of them. Once things start getting mixed up (i.e. player countries and such start expanding) I'll begin maintaining a map.]

The Papal States and Siena, pretty much the only two not trading with Tuscany at the moment, have no reason to accept this offer and so they decline. Siena seems to be stationing a rather large (for an Italian state anyhow) number of troops on its border with Tuscany.

Tuscany has a council meeting with the top merchants, arguing about what to do with Sienna. The conclusion of the meeting is sending some troops down just in case something ugly should spring forth (also I hope the council meeting shows the monti not in power in Sienna, that Tuscany may potentially respect them [http://www.wga.hu/tours/siena/history.html]).

Tuscany, with hands in its vaults, also asks the papal states not to join the fight should something happen. Tuscany also hopes to gain support of the Duchy of Plombino...

Siena's troops do not seem to react too harshly to the presence of Tuscany's forces; in fact, most of them don't give a darn. There aren't a whole lot of them there either.

In Tuscany, there has been spread a rumor that Siena's troops have crossed the border (probably a fake rumor). The Florentine council sends more troops to the border.

(And the battle begins...)

The Florentines meet the Sienna's troops with troops of their own. Another Florentine army makes its way toward Sienna (after all it is close to the border).

The council of Florence sends more troops to reinforce the border.

(Also, I think it would be easier to just to rename my country the Republic of Florence, since I tend to refer to the people as Florentines)

In the Byzantine Empire, things are quickly heating up. Charles VIII- the tyrannical Byzantine Emporer- has just accused his brother, Octavius- who happens to be one of the highest ranking generals in the army as well as one of it's best soldiers- of treason and conspiricy against the Crown. At this accusation, the Byzantines- army and citizens alike- are divided in their loyalties to either the brilliant general or the tyrannical Emporer.

Hoping to be rid of their oppressive monarch, most of the citizens and most of the Palace Guards rally behind Octavius. They are called the True Byzantines.

However, most of the other generals in the army have marked Octavius as their rival and therefore sided with the Emporer, resulting in the majority of the army under Monarch control. They are called, of course, the Royalists.

[Please note, this event did not actually occur in real life.]

The Ottomans, along with other Balkan powers, regard this as a minor improvement; a divided Byzantine state can pose even less of a threat than it did already. Thus the Ottomans turn their attention east towards the looming spectre of the Timurid Empire, while Hungary grows wary of Poland-Lithuania and Austria looks to the south at Venice.

(How is the fight going with Sienna?)

The Medici become the leading family in Tuscany (therefore also the unofficial rulers) with Cosimo de Medici who seems to take a interest in the art and culture.

The civil war rages on as the True Byzantines and the Royalists take the fighting to the streets of Byzantium in one long, bloody battle.

Early one morning [And I mean early, as in 1 A.M.], after many days of fighting, the turning point came when half the army- tired of being forced to kill civilians- deserted to Octavius' side. With reinforcements for his side, Octavius rallies his forces and march to the Royal Palace.

The True Byzantines storm the Palace, with Octavius fighting on the front lines. They easily overrun what little remains of the Royalist defenses and were soon upon Charles VIII, who was startled because he had woken up to his brother pointing a sword at his throat. Charles VIII is arrested and will stand trial while Octavius is crowned as the Emporer of the Byzantine Empire. Though there is still fighting throughout the empire, the worst of the storm has passed as Emporer Octavius I (As he is now called) seeks to end the fighting and rebuild a heavily damaged Byzantium.

Emporer Octavius I has just made a revolutionary move: he has declared the Byzantine Empire a state of religious toleration as he continues to rebuild the ruined empire

Meanwhile, the former Emporer Charles VIII- after escaping and quickly being caught again and another incident where a group fo Royalists attempt to free him but their rescue mission is foiled- was found guilty of his crimes against the Empire and his subjects (These crimes included unjust executions, extortion, using money from his treasury for his own ends, among others...) Charles VIII is then beheaded on the first of the next month [Speaking of which, where are we now in this RP? Timelinewise.]

[Winter 1401. I'm going to assume "religious toleration" means Christians only...TBH acceptance of Islam as well as Christianity is far too modern to take place at this point in history.]

Octavius' move, while unsettling to the people of the Empire, has greatly increased the degree to which other Mediterranean powers are willing to play nice. Specifically, Genoa in particular has offered a mutually beneficial trade partnership.

Meanwhile, Castile has gone to war with Aragon, Portugal and Granada. Milan casts covetous plans on Venetian territory and the Hundred Years' War rages on up north.

[No, he tolerates everyone. He just gives more rights to those who are Christian such as the ability to serve in the military, and such. Basically, non-Christians are second-class citizens. The Ottomans had this policy with Jews and Christians]

As the Byzantines rebuild, most of the remaining Royalists have been tracked down, rounded up, and sent back to Byzantium for judgement. However, one Royalist- none other than the former General John Adrianos- still manages to elude capture with a small group of like-minded soldiers, continually causing trouble for the Bryennios Dynasty (The dynasty that Octavius and Charles VIII belong to).

Octavius I begins a man-hunt after some children mysteriously disappear from a village near the great city of Antioch due to the suspicion that John Adrianos was responsible for their disappearance. He lays down a price of 1 Nummus (This, believe it or not, is actually pretty high payment) for the capture of the General.

[The Ottomans were an Islamic power. You will note that by your own source they did so in accordance with Islamic law. Nevertheless it's allowable, although you lose a bit of support from Christian nations and don't make any headway in relations with the Ottomans so there's no real point.]

[I haven't heard much about the war with Sienna, so I have two scenarios...]

If the Republic of Florence has captured Sienna, the republik will proceed by annexing the Republic of Sienna. The Monti of Sienna will be put on the Florentine Council, and the remaining merchants will not be affected, although some may be elected (by the Florentine Council) to their respective city councils.

If that is not the case, then the Republic of Florence shall continue to attack...
______________________________________________________________________________

Also, Cosimo de Medici decides to create a university in which there would be an increased emphasis on the study of classical Greek & Roman works (I hope that will give the renaissance a start). Cosimo is also looking for architects to complete the Pazzi Chapel.
